Summer 2005 (21-24 August) - Helsinki and Porvoo (Finland)

The Olympic Stadium, Helsinki - this angle show the windows of the hostel in the stadium. I stayed at this hostel.

The Olympic Stadium, Helsinki - built for the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.

The Olympic complex had just hosted the IAAF World Championships, Helsinki - this is one of the fields after the stage had been torn down, as seen from the Olympic Stadium tower.

The Finnish Parliament building, Helsinki.

The Art Museum Kiasma, Helsinki - this is the NE corner of the building and is, unfortunately, the only perspective I have on this fascinating building.

Outside the Art Museum Kiasma, Helsinki - Kiasma features modern art. Surprised?

The Vltava Restaurant, next to Central Station, Helsinki - the only "authentic" czech food restaurant in Helsinki. I suppose since both the local and czech cuisines are bland, it's not a big surprise to find a czech restaurant.

Central Station, Helsinki - if it reminds you of Chicago's main train station, it's because they were both designed by the same architect.

One of the main roads in old Porvoo, the second oldest Finnish town and featuring old wooden buildings.

The city hall, Porvoo - one of the few buildings in old Porvoo made of something other than wood since the original one, surprise surprise, burned down. It is here that Tsar Alexander I granted Finland autonomy (but not freedom).

Inside the old Porvoo city hall - these holes in the stairwell wall provided light to the many different levels of the building during the day.

A street just off of old Porvoo's city hall square.

Looking back on Porvoo, with its cathedral at the top of the hill.

The side entrance to Porvoo Cathedral - also not made of wood, but very attractive in its simplicity nonetheless.
