I realized this weekend that none of my existing ties were going to work for a wedding I am going to this weekend.
I will be wearing a yellow boutonniere, and I have no ties with any yellow in them. So, off I went to the group of stores along Nicollet Mall after work today.
Gwaa. Shopping for a tie is difficult. I know what I want. Something with a hint of yellow but mainly grey/silver and navy, and not the standard 45% angle business tie stripes.
I went to five stores. And all I have to show for it is a better understanding of what I don't want.
Formal, but not boring.
Not too "J. Garcia" but not solid either.
Art Deco over paisleys. But Art Nouveau over corporate.
Ah well, tomorrow is another day of tie searching.

I'm sure Kim at Larue's would be happy to be your personal shopper/buyer!
Posted by mom at April 13, 2005 08:06 AMI tried those two places, nenie, and that is how I know what I don't want. I still don't know how to express what I do want. I just have to see it and have an inexplicable draw towards it.
As far as Kim at Larue's, I don't have that much time and only need a tie, not an 8 hour long shopping event where I'll end up with three new outfits.
I decided to go with a tie that - while it doesn't have yellow in it - will go with yellow.
Posted by silsby at April 14, 2005 08:18 AMword, i guess i'm partial to one cuz ... well, it just smacks of home and the other cuz they actually stock my shirt size (21, 31-33)
Posted by nenie at April 14, 2005 08:40 AMThey were both good places, and if I were looking for a full ensemble, then I might find something, but just finding a tie is hard.
